Here is something most new goldfish owners do not realize: a spotless tank can kill your fish faster than a dirty one. The problem is not the cleanliness — it is the loss of beneficial bacteria.

The next day, it was gasping at the surface. Two days later, it was dead.

Later I learned I had made a very basic mistake — I dumped all the old water, wiped out the entire nitrogen cycle, and the fish spent two days fighting ammonia poisoning before it gave out.

A water change is not about replacing all the water. It is about doing it at the right pace, in the right amount. Here is what I learned after that loss.

Why Do You Need to Change Water?

Water does not get dirty by itself. Fish make it dirty.

Fish waste breaks down into ammonia. Beneficial bacteria convert that into nitrite, then into nitrate. Ammonia and nitrite are toxic. Nitrate is less toxic, but at high levels it still stresses fish.

The point of a water change is to dilute nitrate to a safe level, replenish minerals lost to evaporation, stabilize pH, and remove built-up organic matter.

It is not about making the tank look clean — that is cleaning, not changing water. It is about keeping the water chemistry stable.

How Often? Depends on Tank Size, Stocking, and Filtration

There is no fixed schedule. How often you change water depends on how many fish you have, the size of the tank, the efficiency of the filter, and how much you feed.

General reference:

  • Small tanks (10 to 20 gallons): 20% to 25% weekly
  • Medium tanks (30 to 50 gallons): 15% to 20% weekly
  • Large tanks (50 gallons and up): 15% to 20% every 10 to 14 days

Signs you need to change water more often:

  • More fish than the tank comfortably holds
  • You are feeding heavily
  • A water test shows nitrate above 40 ppm
  • Persistent bubbles on the water surface that do not pop
  • Water looks greenish or yellowish

If you only have one or two goldfish in a well-filtered tank, a 20% water change every two weeks is completely fine. The key is not counting days — it is checking water parameters. Test kits are more reliable than any calendar.

How Much Water to Change? Stay Under 30%

Never change more than 25% to 30% at a time. That is the standard safe range.

If the water is in really bad shape — nitrate over 80 ppm — do not change more than 50% in one go. Split it across two days. Change 30% each time instead of one big 60% change. Less stress on the fish.

The rule of thumb is: enough to dilute, but not enough to shock.

Emergency cases: If ammonia or nitrite levels are dangerously high, you can go up to 30% to 40%, but keep it under that. Use small frequent changes to bring levels down, then find the source — adjust feeding, check the filter, test again.

Step-by-Step Water Change Process

What you need:

  • A clean bucket or container (used only for the tank — no cleaning chemicals)
  • Water conditioner (to remove chlorine and chloramine)
  • Thermometer
  • A siphon or gravel vacuum
  • A clean sponge or scraper (if you need to clean glass)

Step 1: Prepare new water. Fill a clean container with tap or well water. Add water conditioner to remove chlorine and chloramine. Adjust the temperature so it matches the tank — within 2°F to 3°F difference.

Step 2: Remove old water. Use a siphon or gravel vacuum to pull water from the bottom, targeting areas with visible waste or leftover food. The siphon has two benefits: it removes water and cleans the substrate at the same time. In one session, cover about one-third to half of the tank bottom. You do not have to vacuum every square inch each time.

Step 3: Clean the filter if needed. If the filter is due for maintenance, do it during the water change. Rinse the filter media in a bucket of tank water, not tap water. The beneficial bacteria in the media are the backbone of your tank’s stability. Tap water kills them. Never clean all media at once — alternate which part you clean each time.

Step 4: Add new water. Slowly pour or siphon the prepared water back into the tank. Do not dump it all in at once. Add in small amounts, waiting a minute or two between each pour, so the fish have time to adjust to the temperature and chemistry change. Do not pour directly on the fish — aim for the tank wall or the open surface.

Step 5: Check equipment. After refilling, check that the heater, filter, and air pump are running properly. Is the temperature back in the normal range? Is the water flowing as it should?

What to Observe After a Change

Fish are usually a bit more active after a water change — fresh water is stimulating. But if you see any of these after the change, something went wrong:

  • Fish lying at the bottom or staying still
  • Rapid breathing — gills moving fast
  • Gasping at the surface
  • Loss of appetite lasting more than a day

These issues are usually related to a large temperature gap, residual chlorine, or changing too much water. Adjust next time accordingly.

A Simple Habit That Helps

Set a recurring reminder on your phone. It sounds basic, but it is more reliable than your memory. I do mine the same day every week. Once it became routine, my fish stayed consistently healthier than when I just tried to remember.

It is not that your memory is bad. It is just that routines are more reliable. Fish do not live by a calendar, but your watering schedule works better when it follows one.

Goldfish water changes are not about whether you do them. They are about how you do them.

Regular changes. Right portion size. Water conditioned and temperature-matched before it goes in. Added slowly. These become habits after a few weeks. Once you have done it a few times, the whole process takes about ten minutes. Your fish will not say thank you — but their activity level and breathing will tell you whether you got it right.
